Rajasthan Advances ₹34,102-Crore Yamuna Water Conveyance Project

The proposed 295-km underground conveyance system is designed to transfer Rajasthan’s allocated Yamuna water to Churu, Sikar, Jhunjhunu and adjoining areas.

Jaipur: Rajasthan is progressing plans for a large-scale Yamuna Water Project designed to convey the state’s allocated share of Yamuna water to water-deficit areas including Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu. The proposed scheme is intended to create dedicated infrastructure for water that Rajasthan has historically been unable to utilise because of the absence of a suitable conveyance system.

The first phase proposes an approximately 295-km underground conveyance network comprising three pipelines of about 3.6 metres diameter each. The system is planned to operate through a combination of gravity flow and pumping, with provision for tapping points that can also support drinking-water requirements in Haryana.

The project is estimated at ₹34,102.24 crore. Of this, about ₹27,748.96 crore is identified for construction works, ₹3,881.08 crore for land acquisition, ₹293.20 crore for operations and maintenance, and ₹1,382.09 crore for energy requirements, according to the latest project information.

Rajasthan and Haryana had earlier entered into arrangements to enable conveyance of Rajasthan’s allocated Yamuna water through an underground pipeline system from the Western Yamuna Canal. The initiative is intended primarily to strengthen drinking-water availability in Rajasthan’s arid and semi-arid areas

Importantly, the scheme has not yet entered construction. The Detailed Project Report was uploaded to the Central Water Commission’s e-PAMS system on 18 May 2026 and is currently undergoing appraisal. The CWC is responsible for technical scrutiny of major water-resource projects, including schemes involving Rajasthan and the Yamuna basin.

For the water industry, the project could eventually create significant requirements for large-diameter pipelines, pumping stations, valves, surge-control equipment, automation, SCADA, metering, energy-efficient drives and long-distance transmission infrastructure. However, procurement and construction opportunities will depend on completion of the appraisal process, statutory approvals, financing and subsequent tender packages.
