VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), a leading Indian water technology company, has been awarded a significant contract by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) for the refurbishment, finance, operation, maintenance, and transfer (RFOMT) of a 45 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Kodungaiyur, Chennai. The project will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, further strengthening the city’s push toward sustainable water management and industrial reuse.
The TTRO plant, originally developed by CMWSSB in 2019, was designed to supply high-quality treated wastewater to industries located in the Manali–Ennore and Manali–Minjur industrial corridors. Under this new mandate, WABAG will refurbish and upgrade the facility to restore its full operational capacity of 45 MLD within the next 18 months. Following this, the company will undertake operation and maintenance of the plant for a period of 18.5 years, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of treated water that meets required quality and quantity standards.
WABAG already has a strong presence in Chennai’s water reuse infrastructure, operating another 45 MLD TTRO facility at Koyambedu, which was also built and commissioned by the company in 2019. In addition, the company operates a 40 MLD TTRO plant in Ghaziabad under the PPP model, supporting industrial water reuse in the Sahibabad Industrial Area. The Kodungaiyur project further reinforces WABAG’s leadership in advanced water recycling and reuse solutions, positioning it at the forefront of sustainable industrial water management in India.
This project is expected to play a vital role in reducing dependence on freshwater resources by enabling large-scale industrial reuse of treated wastewater. It also aligns with Chennai’s broader vision of transitioning towards a circular water economy, where wastewater is effectively treated and reused as a valuable resource.
Commenting on the development, S. Varadarajan, Whole Time Director & Chief Growth Officer of WABAG, said, “We are delighted to secure this prestigious Recycle & Reuse project from our valued client, CMWSSB. We thank them for their continued trust and confidence in our technological expertise and execution capabilities. This project further strengthens our leadership in the Indian water sector and reinforces our position at the forefront of water recycling and reuse, which will play a critical role in enabling sustainable industrial water management and supporting Chennai’s long-term water security.”
