It changes the goal from basic treatment-for-discharge to advanced purification for immediate reuse. To meet ESG metrics, facilities deploy advanced technological systems, such as ultrafiltration, that can recover 95–99% of grey and blackwater for internal operations. ESG compliance requires systems that reduce carbon and ecological footprints. Technologies such as anaerobic digesters process sewage sludge and capture biomethane. This renewable energy offsets operational power demands, directly reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. ESG implies and impels eco-friendlier processing, accelerating the adoption of innovations like electrocoagulation, which treats water using electrical currents instead of heavy chemical additives.Treating effluent for reuse in cooling or cleaning reduces consumption of and reliance on fresh water. Moreover, advanced wastewater treatments (e.g., membrane filtration) reduce toxic discharges and protect local ecosystems. In addition, they minimise waste discharges, save energy and reduce emissions. Recycling reduces the abstraction of water from natural sources, lowering pollution in ecosystems and reducing the carbon footprint associated with pumping and treating new water. Treated water can be used for boiler feed, equipment washing, and process water, significantly cutting freshwater consumption..Social (S): The "S" in ESG ensures that industrial operations do not compromise local human capital or cause community conflict. By using treated process water for cooling towers or machinery washing, companies reduce their dependency on freshwater tankers and municipal grids. This leaves cleaner potable water available for nearby communities. For instance, in water-scarce regions, companies that drain shared local aquifers face heavy community backlash and litigation. Strict water recycling aligns business operations with local public interests, transforming a potential corporate target into a socially responsible community act..Proactive wastewater recycling demonstrates a positive act of corporate social responsibility and helps maintain positive relationships with local communities that rely on shared water sources. Thus, it ensures water security and water access for neighbouring regions. Reusing treated wastewater minimises health risks by reducing pollution, while improving access to water for agricultural and community needs in water-scarce areas. Recycled sewage is utilised for landscaping, toilet flushing, street cleaning, and fire-fighting, helping manage the growing water demand in cities. Treated wastewater supports farming, providing a sustainable source for irrigation while reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers..Governance (G): The "G" in ESG focuses on tracking transparency, regulatory foresight, and financial stability. Since Governance requires auditable data, modern recycling setups use connected smart sensors and automated water-monitoring tools. These continuously track several important water quality parameters. Designing systems that are "recycling-ready" allows companies to avoid unexpected capital expenditures. Transparent metrics protect a company's market valuation. Sophisticated investors look directly at these data points to separate true sustainability achievements from shallow greenwashing..It ensures Regulatory Compliance, Robust ESG Reporting, Transparency, and Risk Management by Identifying Leaks and Inefficiencies in Real-time, Reducing Operational Risks associated with Water Shortages, etc. Companies use water monitoring tools and data to track KPIs. Implementing water recycling programs helps organisations meet regulatory requirements, reduce dependence on public water systems, and strengthen sustainable management practices.INVESTMENT and REPUTATIONInvestors use ESG data to prioritise companies with strong water management practices, thereby boosting the reputation and long-term viability of firms that recycle water. Companies implementing water recycling technologies often qualify for "green bonds" or sustainability-linked loans, lowering their overall borrowing costs..With escalating global water scarcity, recycling mitigates operational risks. It ensures business continuity during droughts and protects companies against volatile municipal water pricing. ESG mandates push companies to meet increasingly stringent local and global environmental discharge regulations, helping them avoid costly fines and litigation. Public commitments to ESG goals improve brand value and customer loyalty while effectively managing the social and environmental impacts of corporate operations on local communities..Key ESG-Driven Technologies, Challenges and the Path ForwardESG frameworks heavily incentivise the adoption of advanced water treatment technologies, including Membrane Bioreactors (MBR), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). While ESG provides momentum, the effectiveness of these technologies depends on overcoming barriers such as high initial capital expenditure and energy consumption. Therefore, ESG effectiveness requires coupling these systems with renewable energy sources to avoid increasing a facility's carbon footprint. And in order to ensure long-term effectiveness, corporations and utilities are increasingly integrating water reuse into broader circular economy strategies, supported by standardised sustainability reporting metrics like the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the SASB Standards..HURDLES AND SOLUTIONSAlthough India has made significant strides in wastewater treatment, a massive treatment gap still remains. Presently, there are approximately 1469 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in India. However, only about 40% of the estimated 72,368 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage generated is actually treated. Traditional STPs are associated with high energy consumption, odour issues, and maintenance failures. The amount of sewage generated grows faster than the infrastructure to treat it. It is expected that many states will soon adopt stricter compliance standards. This would automatically necessitate the move from conventional to modern automated systems..When it comes to ETPs, of the 69,854 industries requiring them, over 67,956 operate with functional ETPs, while roughly 2,000 operate without them. As far as CETPs are concerned, there are little more than 200 CETPs operating across 20 states, with about 50 designed for Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)..Interestingly, 60% of India’s total treatment capacity is concentrated in just five states /UTs, i. e. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Karnataka. Several regions, including Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, have almost nil or very limited functional STPs. Monitoring of the ETPs is done by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and the NGT (National Green Tribunal) has enforced strict compliance requiring industrial units to treat effluent to prescribed standards before discharge. Industries lacking functional ETPs face immediate closures, with provisions for water and electricity supply disconnection for offenders..The main hurdles in wastewater recycling and reuse in India can be grouped under the following categories:Costs and Financial Constraints: The capital-intensive nature of advanced treatment technologies makes them unaffordable for many municipalities and industries. Even after water is treated, the lack of infrastructure to transport it from treatment plants to industrial or agricultural users limits its reuse potential..Socio-Cultural Barriers: Driven by multiple psychological reasons and safety concerns regarding the quality of treated wastewater, public acceptance is low, especially for domestic use. .Lack of Clear Understanding of Standards: There seems to be a lack of clarity about the guidelines and standardised quality standards for different types of reuse (e.g., industrial, agricultural, residential). This leads to poor quality control..Operation and Maintenance: Inconsistent power supply, lack of trained personnel for managing complex treatment technologies, and faulty sewage collection networks hamper operational efficiency. And, the seasonal nature of rainfall (monsoons) reduces the year-round demand for treated water for agriculture. .NEED FOR ADVANCED WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIESMost of these hurdles underscore the need for a shift towards decentralised, cost-effective treatment systems that align with local needs and enable immediate local reuse, thereby minimising the need for transportation infrastructure and the associated environmental footprints. Advanced wastewater technologies are necessary to remove complex, persistent pollutants that conventional primary and secondary treatments cannot eliminate. These advanced systems (such as membrane filtration and advanced oxidation) are essential for meeting strict regulatory discharge standards, protecting fragile ecosystems from nutrient overload, and reclaiming water for safe reuse..Furthermore, advanced treatments are critical to modern environmental management mainly for the following reasons:Elimination of Micropollutants: Conventional methods are often ineffective at removing persistent contaminants such as pharmaceutical residues, hormones, and heavy metals. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are designed to break down these complex molecules..Nutrient Removal: Excess nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff and municipal sewage cause eutrophication – uncontrolled algal blooms that deplete oxygen in water bodies. Advanced tertiary processes actively remove these nutrients to protect aquatic life..Water Reuse and Conservation: With growing global water scarcity, advanced technologies (such as reverse osmosis) purify wastewater to standards that allow it to be directly reused for drinking, agriculture, or industrial cooling..Regulatory Compliance: Local and international environmental protection boards are continuously lowering the limits for allowable pollutants in discharged effluent. Advanced technologies ensure that municipalities and industries remain compliant, avoiding severe fines..Resource Recovery: New innovations shift wastewater plants from mere waste disposals to resource recovery hubs. Technologies like anaerobic digestion can generate biogas for renewable energy, while others capture nutrients for agricultural fertiliser..In short, advanced wastewater treatment methods (also known as tertiary treatment) are specialised physical, chemical, and biological processes used to remove contaminants not removed by conventional primary and secondary treatments.
