Ranchi Selected for Urban River Management Plan Under Namami Gange ; Survey to Begin Next Month
In a significant move toward restoring its urban ecology, Ranchi has been selected as one of the 60 cities across India to implement the Urban River Management Plan (URMP). Developed under the flagship Namami Gange programme, the initiative aims to integrate river health into the city's long-term urban planning framework.
The project is set to gain momentum next month when a specialized technical team comprising experts from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) arrives in the state capital. The team will conduct a comprehensive survey to assess the current state of Ranchi’s water bodies and identify key areas for intervention.
A Holistic Approach to Urban Water The URMP is designed to move beyond simple cleaning drives. It focuses on a sustainable "river-centric" urban development model that addresses:
Pollution Abatement: Mapping sewage discharge points and planning for decentralized treatment plants.
Encroachment Clearance: Identifying and restoring original riverine floodplains and catchment areas.
Riverfront Development: Creating eco-friendly public spaces that reconnect citizens with their local rivers, such as the Harmu and Subarnarekha.
The Survey Phase The upcoming visit by the NIUA and NMCG team is a critical first step. The survey will involve GIS mapping, water quality testing, and consultations with local municipal authorities to align the URMP with Ranchi's existing smart city infrastructure.
By including Ranchi in this 60-city cohort, the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti aims to demonstrate how inland cities, not just those directly on the banks of the Ganga, play a vital role in the health of the entire river basin. For Ranchi, this represents a unique opportunity to solve perennial issues of water logging and river pollution through a scientifically backed, national-level framework.
